You drop off the boat, level out at eighteen metres, and a hawksbill turtle comes over the reef towards you. You hit record. Back on deck you play it back and the whole thing is a blue-green soup: the turtle is a silhouette, the coral is grey, and the moment you actually had is not in the file.

Water is roughly eight hundred times denser than air, and it removes light, colour, contrast and sharpness in an order that no auto mode can compensate for. Red is effectively gone by five metres. Orange follows, then yellow. By fifteen metres you are recording in two colours. None of that is a camera fault and all of it is fixable — with manual white balance, physical filters, ISO discipline and about two minutes of work per clip in post.

Before anything else, know your camera's real depth limit, because this is the spec where the current cameras differ most and where getting it wrong destroys hardware. The honest headline: DJI leads on bare depth, with the Osmo Action 6 and Osmo Action 5 Pro both rated to 20m. The Insta360 X6 matches them at 20m and adds two 1/1.1-inch sensors and PureVideo for the light below a few metres. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is 12m — snorkelling and freediving, not scuba. The GoPro HERO13 Black is 10m, and the GoPro MAX2 is 5m. And one absolute rule: the Insta360 Luna Ultra has no water, dust or splash resistance of any kind. Do not take it snorkelling, do not take it on a boat deck in spray, do not take it near the pool. It is a gimbal camera for dry land.

01Depth Ratings — Know Your Camera's Limits

A depth rating is a static pressure test in controlled conditions. Real diving adds salt, thermal shock, wave impact and a door seal that has been opened three hundred times. Treat the number as the outer edge of the envelope, not a target, and leave yourself margin.

DJI wins bare depth and there is no way around it — 20m on both the Action 6 and the Action 5 Pro, which covers the large majority of recreational dive profiles with no housing at all. That means no seals to check beyond the camera's own door, no fogging, and full touchscreen access. If you dive without a housing, that is a real and material advantage.

The reason the Insta360 X6 heads this table anyway is that it matches DJI at 20m and brings two things DJI cannot: two 1/1.1-inch square Sony sensors at F2.0, which is the largest total light-gathering area of any camera here, and PureVideo with two additional ambient light sensors, which is the only named low-light mode among these cameras. Below about five metres, low light is the problem underwater — not depth. It also has a 2.32-inch OLED screen at 1200 nits, the brightest display in this guide, which matters when you are trying to read a frame through a mask in bright surface light.

Where the Ace Pro 2 and the HERO13 sit. Twelve metres and ten metres are snorkelling and freediving numbers, not scuba numbers, and you should treat them that way. Note that we publish no cased depth figure for either the Ace Pro 2 or the HERO13 — both manufacturers sell dive cases, but a cased rating we have not verified is not a number to plan a 30-metre dive around. The published 60m cased figures in this guide belong to the DJI Osmo Action 6, the Osmo Action 5 Pro, the Insta360 X6 and the Insta360 X5.

Salt water is the real killer, not depth. Rinse in fresh water the same day, every time, housing or no housing. Then open the door and check the gasket channel for sand. A single grain on a seal is the entire failure mode, and it will not announce itself until you are at ten metres.

02Housings — When You Actually Need One

A housing is not only about depth. It is impact protection, a barrier against salt corrosion, and a second seal. Here is when it stops being optional:

  • Any dive beyond the bare rating. Beyond 20m on the DJI Osmo Action 6, Action 5 Pro or Insta360 X6; beyond 15m on the Insta360 X5; beyond 12m on the Insta360 Ace Pro 2; beyond 10m on the GoPro HERO13 Black; beyond 5m on the GoPro MAX2.
  • Surfing, whitewater and anything with impact. A wave striking a camera creates a momentary pressure spike far above the static pressure at that depth. Depth ratings do not describe impact.
  • Repeated salt-water use. A housing is cheaper than a corroded camera, and door seals degrade whether or not you flooded anything.
  • Cold water. Elastomer seals stiffen below about 10°C, which raises leak risk on a bare camera. Worth noting that the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is the only camera in this guide with a published operating range at all — −20°C to 45°C — so in cold water it is the one where you are not guessing about the electronics, even though the housing question still applies.

Choosing one. Buy the manufacturer's own case if there is one for your camera. First-party housings are designed around the exact lens protrusion, button positions and screen, they preserve the fit of the mounting frame, and the depth rating they carry is the one the manufacturer tested. Third-party cases are often good and always a leap of faith. Two things to check whichever you buy: a glass lens port rather than acrylic, because acrylic scratches and softens the image; and whether the case will accept a filter, because a housing that blocks your red filter has removed your main colour tool.

For diving specifically, the 360 capture changes the job underwater more than on land: you cannot pan fast in water, and marine life does not wait. Record the whole sphere and choose where the camera was pointing afterwards, which means the turtle that came past your shoulder is still in the file.

The honest counterpoint on price: $699.99 is more than twice the GoPro MAX2's $299.99. But the MAX2 is rated to 5m, which rules it out of everything on this page below snorkel depth. You are not comparing like with like.


03White Balance Underwater — Why Auto Fails

Auto white balance is built for air, where the whole spectrum is present and the camera's job is to work out the colour of the light source. Underwater the spectrum itself has been amputated. Red is gone, then orange, then yellow. Auto sees a blue-green frame, concludes the scene has a strong blue cast, and removes blue — which takes the last colour information in the image with it and leaves you grey. Manual white balance is the single highest-value setting change you can make underwater.

The most reliable method is not a number at all: descend to your working depth, fill the frame with something neutral — sand, a slate, the back of a white fin — and set a custom white balance there. Redo it if you change depth by more than about five metres, because the light you are correcting for has changed.

If you shoot flat or log, set white balance manually anyway. A flat profile preserves latitude; it does not preserve wavelengths that never reached the sensor. Getting white balance approximately right in the water is always easier than reconstructing it afterwards.

Two of those matter specifically in water. The flip screen is the only articulating screen on any action camera, and underwater that is the difference between framing a shot beneath you and rolling onto your back to guess at it — which is also why it is the best of these cameras for macro work on small reef life. And 13.5 stops is exactly the specification a reef shot needs, because the problem is not darkness, it is a bright surface four or five stops above a shaded overhang in the same frame.

Be clear about the limit: 12m is a snorkelling and freediving rating. It comfortably covers every snorkelling depth there is, with margin. It is not a scuba camera without a case, and we publish no cased figure for it.


04Red and Magenta Filters — When and Why

A filter cannot add light that is not there, but it can rebalance what is. A red filter attenuates blue and green so the remaining red in the scene is proportionally stronger — which is why it works in clear tropical water, where blue dominates, and why it does nothing useful in a murky green quarry. A magenta filter does the same job against green-dominant water: coastal shallows with algae, lakes, kelp.

Two practical rules. First, a filter is a fixed correction and the water is not: the same red filter that saves a shot at twelve metres will make a five-metre shot look like a sunset. If your dive profile moves a lot, a flip-style mount that swings the filter out of the light path is worth the extra bulk over a screw-on you cannot remove mid-dive. Second, a filter costs you light — typically one to two stops — at exactly the depth where you have least to spare, which is why filters and video lights are complements rather than alternatives.

Check filter and housing compatibility before the trip. Many housings will not accept a filter at all, and the ones that do usually take a specific thread. On filter availability for the cameras in this guide, our verified data covers the flat action cameras rather than the 360 models — the ND filter guide has the full table, including the fact that Freewell makes no filters at all for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, whatever else you may have read.

05ISO and Shutter — Keep It Clean

Water absorbs light exponentially with depth, so an action camera left on auto will raise ISO aggressively, and high-ISO underwater footage is the worst kind of noisy: the grain sits in large flat areas of blue where there is no detail to hide it, and no denoiser removes it without turning the water to plastic. Cap ISO manually rather than trusting auto.

The 180-degree shutter rule still applies underwater: shutter at double your frame rate. 1/60 at 30fps, 1/120 at 60fps. Shoot 60fps for anything that moves quickly — a reef shark passing, a dolphin, a diver finning — because the extra frames give you a usable half-speed cut, and slow movement underwater looks better slowed further.

Set a hard ISO ceiling in the menu. Auto ISO with no cap will happily give you ISO 6400 in a wreck, and that footage is unusable. The exact ceiling available differs by camera, so set the lowest cap that still gets you a usable image at the depth you are diving, and test it in the pool before the trip rather than at the wreck.

Credit where it is due, and it matters most in exactly this section: the Action 6 has the best low-light hardware of any flat action camera here. A 1/1.1-inch sensor behind an aperture you can force to f/2 is the largest light-gathering combination available, and underwater — where the whole problem is a shortage of light — that is the most useful specification on the page. Its 20m bare rating is also the joint deepest. Set the aperture to f/2 manually below about ten metres; auto will not always give you the wide-open setting when you want it.

Two things to weigh against it. DJI publishes no dynamic-range figure for any Osmo Action camera, and a reef frame is a dynamic-range problem as much as a low-light one. And at $436.00 it is $126 more than the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 — which for snorkelling depths buys you the flip screen, 8K30 and 13.5 published stops instead of the deeper rating you may never use.


06Stabilisation Underwater — When It Works and When It Doesn't

Electronic stabilisation is transformative on land and situational in water, and the difference comes down to whether the frame contains distant reference points.

Wide reef shots: leave it on and turn it up. FlowState, RockSteady 3.0 and HyperSmooth 6.0 all remove the low-frequency drift of fin kicks and gentle current beautifully, and a slow stabilised reef pan looks close to a dolly move. This is stabilisation at its best — the motion it is cancelling is exactly the kind it was designed for.

Close macro: turn it off. Inside about thirty centimetres of a nudibranch or a shrimp, the stabiliser has no distant features to lock onto and starts hunting — you get a slow warping around the edges of the subject that looks like the water itself is moving. Switch stabilisation off, brace with two hands or a small tripod, and let the camera be still. This is the scenario where the Insta360 Ace Pro 2's flip screen earns its place, because holding a locked-off macro frame is much easier when you can see the frame without contorting.

Horizon lock: off. 360 Horizon Lock, HorizonSteady and their equivalents work from the camera's sense of which way is down, and underwater — no gravity cue you can trust from the image, a seafloor that slopes, a surface that reflects — they mislead. Turn it off or you will surface with footage that tilts for no visible reason. The exception is a 360 camera like the Insta360 X6, where levelling happens as part of reframing in the edit and you can simply choose a level horizon after the fact.

One thing you cannot stabilise away: your own buoyancy. Get neutral, breathe slowly, and stop finning before you press record. Two seconds of stillness before and after a shot is worth more than any stabilisation setting in this guide.

07Colour Correction in Post — The Three-Step Fix

Even with correct white balance and the right filter, underwater footage needs finishing. Water has removed contrast along with colour, and no in-camera profile fully restores it. This takes about two minutes a clip and the order matters.

Step 1 — white balance. Use the colour picker on something neutral in frame: a dive slate, a patch of sand, a grey rock. If there is nothing neutral, start at roughly 8000K and push tint towards magenta, then correct by eye against your memory of the dive rather than against the screen's idea of neutral.

Step 2 — contrast. Water flattens contrast severely. Pull the shadows down slightly, lift the highlights, and add a gentle S-curve — drop the lower third of the curve and raise the upper third. Stop earlier than you want to; over-contrasted underwater footage looks like a filter rather than a dive.

Step 3 — hue against hue. This is the step that makes the difference between "corrected" and "right". Shift the blue range towards cyan to bring back the turquoise the eye remembers, and nudge the green range slightly towards yellow to pull the chlorophyll cast out of coastal water. Two small moves; the whole clip resolves.

Editing underwater footage — the tools that matter

DaVinci Resolve (free tier) has everything above: colour picker, curves, and hue-versus-hue. CapCut has white balance, curves and HSL in its free tier and will handle all three steps on a phone — note it exports to 4K60 maximum, so it is not the tool for 8K sources. Gyroflow (free, open source) reads the gyro data embedded in GoPro, DJI and Insta360 files and stabilises after the fact, which is the answer if you followed the advice above and shot your macro clips with stabilisation off. LumaFusion at $29.99 one-off handles 8K on capable hardware, 10-bit and log, which makes it the best mobile option for footage from an 8K camera.

One workflow limitation to know if you shoot Insta360, stated plainly: the Insta360 App edits 8K but cannot export 8K or 11K on mobile — that needs Insta360 Studio on a desktop. If your entire edit happens on a phone on the boat, that is a real constraint and you should plan around it: reframe and export at 4K or 5.7K on the phone, and re-export at full resolution at home if a clip deserves it.


08Dive Light versus Video Light

A dive light throws a narrow, intense beam for signalling and for looking into holes. Point one at a subject on video and you get a hot circle with hard-edged shadows around it. A video light throws a wide, even flood designed to light a whole frame at once. They are different tools and one does not substitute for the other.

Mount the light on an arm, not on the camera. A 15–20cm articulating arm off a tray moves the light source away from the lens axis, and that is what eliminates backscatter — the snowstorm of illuminated particles that appears the moment your light and your lens look at the same water from the same place. Aim it slightly outward so the subject is lit from the side. Side light also creates the shape and texture that makes reef footage look three-dimensional.

We are not naming products or prices for lights. The previous version of this page recommended three specific lights at three specific prices we cannot verify; the lumen and beam-angle guidance above is what actually drives the buying decision anyway.

09Audio Underwater — It Is Useless, and That Is Fine

Your camera's microphones cannot record anything usable underwater. Sound travels roughly four times faster in water than in air, but the more fundamental problem is impedance: a diaphragm designed to be moved by air pressure sits behind a sealed port surrounded by water, and what reaches it is muffled rumble at best. Add a housing and you have put a sealed box around a microphone that was already in the wrong medium.

It is worth saying that no manufacturer in this category publishes microphone specifications at all — no mic count, no sensitivity, no frequency response — so there is no spec sheet to compare here even if you wanted to. Plan on building the edit without live audio.

What to do instead:

  • Record narration afterwards. Every professional dive film does this. Sit down after the dive, describe what happened while it is fresh, and cut the picture to it. It is more engaging than live commentary and infinitely more controllable.
  • Layer ambience recorded above the surface. Waves, the boat, the regulator on the surface interval, wind. Placed under the picture, topside ambience reads as underwater atmosphere and gives the edit somewhere to breathe.
  • Use a hydrophone if the subject justifies it. A dedicated underwater microphone into a separate recorder will genuinely capture whale song, dolphin clicks and reef snap. It is a niche purchase for people making films about sound, not a vacation-clip accessory.
  • Do not fight for camera audio. Mute the camera track. Nobody has ever watched a dive video and wished for more regulator noise.

It depends entirely on the camera, and the spread is wide. Rated to 20m bare: the DJI Osmo Action 6, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and the Insta360 X6 — enough for the majority of recreational dive profiles with no housing at all, which also means no fogging and full touchscreen access. Rated to 15m: the Insta360 X5. Rated to 12m: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, which is a snorkelling and freediving camera. Rated to 10m: the GoPro HERO13 Black. Rated to 5m: the GoPro MAX2. And rated to nothing at all: the Insta360 Luna Ultra has no water, dust or splash resistance and must be kept away from water entirely. For anything with impact — surfing, whitewater — use a housing regardless of the rating, because wave impact creates pressure spikes that a static depth test does not describe.

Why does my underwater footage look green or blue?

Because water removes light wavelengths in sequence with depth. Red is effectively gone by about five metres, then orange, then yellow, and by fifteen metres only blue and green remain. Auto white balance cannot restore a wavelength that never reached the sensor — it just removes blue and leaves you grey. The fix has two halves. In the water: a red filter for clear tropical blue water or a magenta filter for green coastal water, plus manual white balance between 5500K and 6500K depending on depth. In post: white-balance off a neutral object, gentle S-curve contrast, then the hue-versus-hue curve to push blue towards cyan and green towards yellow.

Do I need a red filter for shallow snorkelling?

Usually not, and it can actively hurt. Between the surface and about five metres, enough red light remains that manual white balance at 4500–5000K handles the correction, and a red filter at that depth makes footage look artificially warm. A filter starts earning its keep around five metres and becomes close to essential past ten. If your snorkelling involves repeated breath-hold descents to eight or ten metres, use a flip-style mount that lets you swing the filter in and out rather than a screw-on you cannot change in the water.

How do I stop the housing fogging up?

Fogging is warm humid air trapped inside the case condensing on a cold lens port. Four rules. Seal the housing in the driest, coolest air available — indoors or in air conditioning, never on a humid boat deck. Put two or three desiccant strips inside, along the walls and away from the port, and replace them every few dives. Keep the camera itself cool before sealing, because a camera that has been in the sun heats the trapped air. And accept that there is no in-water fix: if it fogs, you surface, open up, dry everything, replace the desiccant and re-seal in dry air. This is a genuine argument for choosing a camera you can dive bare — on a 20m-rated camera like the Insta360 X6 or the DJI Osmo Action 6, most recreational dives have no housing and therefore no fogging at all.
