These are the two cameras most people are choosing between in 2026, and they have converged so far that the decision now turns on three or four specifics rather than any overall winner. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is $319.00. The GoPro HERO13 Black is $379.99. Both shoot excellent footage.

We ran both through the same standardised tests — daylight, low light, water, wind, chest-mount POV — and the honest summary is that DJI wins on hardware and value, GoPro wins on one specific kind of stabilised footage, and the $60 gap between them is doing very little work.

◆ Before you pick either

There is a third camera in this price bracket that neither of these has to beat in a straight fight, and it changes the answer for a lot of buyers: the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is $309.99 — cheaper than both — and it shoots 8K30, more than double the DJI's maximum resolution. It comes up in every section below, because on most of these criteria it is either level with the winner or ahead of it. If you are open to a third option, read the three-way comparison.

Image Quality: Sensor Showdown

This is the least close section on the page, and it is not close in GoPro's favour.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro uses a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor. The HERO13 Black uses a 1/1.9-inch sensor with a 27.6MP resolution. That is a full size class of difference, and sensor area is the single most reliable predictor of how a camera behaves when the light gets difficult — which on an action camera is most of the time.

In daylight, both are genuinely good and the gap narrows to almost nothing. Drop the light — dusk, indoors, under trees, underwater below a few metres — and the DJI holds detail in the shadows where the GoPro starts smearing it into noise.

GoPro's counter-argument is resolution and glass: 5.3K60 against DJI's 4K120, and the HB-series lens at f/2.5, which is marginally wider than DJI's f/2.8. The 5.3K is genuinely useful if you crop. The aperture difference is real but small enough that the sensor gap swamps it.

◆ Where Insta360 sits

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 matches the DJI's 1/1.3-inch sensor size exactly, so it is in the same class — but it pairs it with a Leica SUMMARIT lens at F2.6, wider than DJI's f/2.8, and shoots 8K30. It is also the only one of the three whose manufacturer publishes a dynamic-range figure: 13.5 stops. DJI and GoPro may be comparable; they don't say, which means on the spec that matters most for high-contrast footage you're taking it on trust with both of them.

For $309.99 — less than either camera on this page — that is the strongest image-quality package of the three.

Stabilisation: HyperSmooth vs HorizonSteady

This is GoPro's section and it earns it.

HyperSmooth 6.0 with AutoBoost and 360 Horizon Lock is still the most confident stabilisation on the market for chest-mounted, forward-facing walking and running footage. It is the one thing GoPro has never lost, and if that is most of what you shoot, this section alone can decide the purchase.

DJI's RockSteady 3.0+, with HorizonBalancing and HorizonSteady, is very close. HorizonSteady holds a level horizon through full camera rotation, which is the more aggressive mode of the two systems. On a bike, a board, or a helmet, the two are effectively indistinguishable in blind comparison. On a chest mount at walking pace, GoPro's is still slightly calmer.

◆ Where Insta360 sits

FlowState stabilisation with 360 Horizon Lock is the third of the three mature systems, and in practice all three have converged to the point where stabilisation should rarely be your deciding factor unless you specifically shoot chest-mount POV. Worth knowing: the Ace Pro 2 is the only one of the three with a 2.5-inch flip screen, which matters more than a stabilisation rounding error if you ever film yourself — you can see the frame instead of guessing at it.

Battery Life

A rated 240 minutes against roughly 150 is not a marginal difference — it is the single biggest practical gap between these two cameras. DJI also includes 64GB of built-in storage (47GB usable), which has saved more shoots than any spec sheet gives it credit for when a card fails or gets left at home.

◆ Where Insta360 sits

The Ace Pro 2 sits between the two at 180 minutes — better than the GoPro, behind the DJI. But it is the only one of the three to publish a fast-charge figure: 18 minutes to 80% off a 30W adapter. If you shoot in sessions with breaks — most people do — twenty minutes of charging beats sixty minutes of extra runtime you can't top up.

Twenty metres without a housing is exceptional and covers most recreational diving. The GoPro's 10m is fine for snorkelling and pool work and marginal for anything below that.

The bigger issue underwater is not depth, it is colour and light — water eats red first and gets dark fast. That puts the sensor back in the frame: the DJI's 1/1.3-inch sensor is doing meaningful work below five metres where the GoPro's 1/1.9-inch is already struggling. If you dive, this is a DJI page.

◆ Where Insta360 sits

The Ace Pro 2 is rated to 12m bare — better than the GoPro, well short of the DJI. For snorkelling and swimming it is more than enough; for scuba, DJI is the honest answer of the three. Insta360's own dive-capable option is a different camera, so on this one criterion the Ace Pro 2 comes third of three. That's the section where DJI genuinely deserves the sale.

Worth noting the one Insta360 camera you should not take near water: the Luna Ultra has no water, dust or splash resistance at all, despite being the newest and most expensive camera in the range. It's a vlogging gimbal, not an action camera.

Audio

Neither of these is a serious audio device, and both manufacturers are quiet about microphone specifications, so we are not going to quote numbers we can't source.

Qualitatively, and consistently across our tests: both handle speech at conversational distance in still air perfectly well, both are overwhelmed by wind above roughly 20km/h without an accessory, and both are transformed by an external wireless mic. GoPro's Media Mod and DJI's Mic ecosystem are both mature; DJI's has the edge on range and on how easily it pairs with its own cameras.

Same conclusion — external mic, every time. The relevant difference isn't the microphones, it's whether you can see yourself while recording. The Ace Pro 2's flip screen means you can frame a piece-to-camera in one take; on both cameras on this page you're shooting blind and checking afterwards.

Ecosystem and Accessories

GoPro, and it isn't close.

A decade and a half of mounts, housings, clips, harnesses and third-party parts means that if a mounting problem exists, someone has solved it for a GoPro. DJI's ecosystem has grown quickly and covers everything mainstream — chest, helmet, bar, pole, magnetic quick-release — but the long tail belongs to GoPro.

In practice this matters far less than it used to, because all three major brands now use compatible mounting fingers and standard threads. Unless you need something genuinely unusual, any mount you own will fit any of these cameras.

The Verdict

Between these two, buy the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. It is $60 cheaper than the GoPro, has a sensor a full class larger, lasts roughly 90 minutes longer per charge, goes twice as deep without a housing, weighs less, and throws in 64GB of storage. GoPro wins stabilisation for chest-mount POV and owns the accessory long tail. If neither of those is your priority, DJI is the better camera and the better value.

Buy the GoPro HERO13 Black if chest-mounted walking or running POV is most of what you shoot. HyperSmooth 6.0 is still the benchmark for that specific job, and 5.3K60 gives you crop room the DJI doesn't have.

Neither, for most buyers. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is $309.99 — cheaper than both — matches the DJI's sensor size, more than doubles its maximum resolution at 8K30, is the only one of the three to publish a dynamic-range figure, and is the only one with a flip screen. You give up 60 minutes of battery against the DJI and 8 metres of waterproofing, and you get the best image-quality package of the three for the lowest price.

If you dive seriously, buy the DJI. If you live on a chest mount, buy the GoPro. For everything else, the Ace Pro 2 is the one we'd buy.
