You have a new action camera and you are looking at a menu that wants decisions you have no basis for making. 4K30 or 4K60? Widest lens or the flat one? Auto white balance or 5500K? ISO capped at 800 or 1600? Every manufacturer ships different defaults, none of them explains what those defaults cost you, and the answer changes completely between a snow slope and a night market.

This cheat sheet covers four cameras — the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, DJI Osmo Action 6, DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and GoPro HERO13 Black — across eight scenarios you will actually shoot. One note on how we write the settings: where a mode has a manufacturer name we use it (FlowState, PureVideo, RockSteady 3.0, HorizonSteady, HyperSmooth 6.0). Where it doesn't, we describe the setting rather than guess at a menu label, because labels move between firmware versions and a cheat sheet that sends you hunting for a menu item that no longer exists is worse than no cheat sheet.

Two things drive most of what follows. The Ace Pro 2 is the only one of the four that shoots above 5.3K — 8K30, against 4K120 on both DJIs and 5.3K60 on the GoPro — which changes what "resolution" is for: not delivery, reframing. And the Action 6 is the only one with a variable aperture, f/2 to f/4, which means it is the only one that can control exposure without an ND filter or a stupid shutter speed. Those two facts pull in opposite directions and both are real.

On sensors, be honest about the order: Action 6 at 1/1.1", then Ace Pro 2 and Action 5 Pro level at 1/1.3", then the HERO13 at 1/1.9". Insta360 is the only one of the three brands that publishes a dynamic-range figure at all — 13.5 stops for the Ace Pro 2. DJI and GoPro publish nothing, which does not mean they are worse; it means you are taking it on trust.

01Mountain Biking

MTB is the stabilisation stress test and the exposure stress test at the same time: high-frequency handlebar buzz, and dappled forest light that swings four stops in half a second.

Shoot 4K60. You want the frame rate for the half-speed slow-motion of a rear wheel stepping out, and 60fps gives the stabiliser twice as many frames to work from on vibration. Cap ISO at 1600 — under canopy you will need it, and 1600 on a 1/1.3" or 1/1.1" sensor is still clean enough. Pull EV to −0.5 in dappled light: blown highlights through leaves are unrecoverable, crushed shadows mostly are not.

Mount. Chest gives the most stable POV and the best sense of speed because it sits low. Helmet captures where you are looking and is the only mount that shows a line choice properly. Handlebar is the worst of the three for footage and the best for showing terrain — if you use it, lock shutter to 1/120 behind an ND16 so the trail surface has motion blur instead of strobing.

The Action 6's aperture is a genuine advantage here and worth saying plainly: in bright sun it can stop down to f/4 and hold a sane shutter speed with no filter on the front. On the Ace Pro 2, the Action 5 Pro and the HERO13 the aperture is fixed, so an ND is the only way to get there. If you shoot mostly in open bright terrain, that is a real reason to look at the Action 6.

02Skiing and Snowboarding

Snow breaks two things: white balance and batteries. Auto WB reads a white-dominant frame as overexposed blue and corrects towards grey, so your powder goes flat and slightly cyan. Lock white balance to 5500K and stop thinking about it. Push EV to +0.5, because the meter will try to make snow mid-grey and snow is not mid-grey.

Cold. Keep spares against your body, not in a shell pocket. Start recording at the top of the run rather than at the bottom of the lift, because a battery that has been sitting in the wind for eight minutes will read lower than it is. On rated runtime the DJIs are ahead — 240 minutes against the Ace Pro 2's 180 — and on a full lift-served day that gap is real.

Two things go the other way. The Ace Pro 2 is the only one of the four with a published operating range of −20°C to 45°C; DJI and GoPro state nothing, so in genuine cold you are guessing with them. And it charges to 80% in 18 minutes off a 30W adapter, which on a lunch stop is worth more than an hour of rated runtime — neither DJI nor GoPro publishes a fast-charge figure.

03Diving and Snorkelling

Water eats red first. It is measurably gone by about five metres, orange follows, and by fifteen metres you are working with blue and green only. No auto white balance can restore a wavelength that is not reaching the sensor, so this scenario is about manual WB, physical filters, and ISO discipline.

Know your depth limit before you get wet. The bare ratings differ more than any other spec on this page: DJI Osmo Action 6 and Action 5 Pro 20m, Insta360 Ace Pro 2 12m, GoPro HERO13 Black 10m. DJI wins this outright and there is no way to spin it — if you dive without a housing, DJI gives you the most margin.

White balance by depth. 0–5m: 4500–5000K, and auto is often acceptable at snorkelling depth. 5–15m: 5500–6500K, plus a magenta filter in green coastal water. 15m and below: 6500–8000K with a red filter, and accept that a filter alone stops being enough somewhere past 20m — you need a light.

For snorkelling specifically, the Ace Pro 2 is the pick of the four despite the shallower rating, for two reasons that only matter in the water: PureVideo is the only named low-light mode among these cameras, and the 2.5-inch flip screen is the only articulating screen on any action camera, which is what lets you frame a reef shot below you without rolling onto your back. Twelve metres covers every snorkelling depth there is with a wide margin. For actual scuba, take the DJI.

Rinse everything in fresh water afterwards, housing or no housing. One grain of sand on a door gasket is the whole failure mode.

04Vlogging and Talking Head

The widest field of view on any of these cameras stretches faces at arm's length. Switch to the least-distorted setting your camera offers, drop to 4K30, and add +0.3 EV so your face is not metered against a bright sky.

Framing yourself is where these four separate. The Ace Pro 2 has an articulating 2.5-inch screen at 900 nits — you see the actual frame you are recording, at the actual size. The Action 6 answers with two 800-nit screens, which is bright and genuinely useful outdoors, but the front one is 1.46 inches and you are reading a thumbnail. The Action 6's f/2 setting is the better answer for background separation; the flip screen is the better answer for knowing what you shot. Pick whichever mistake you make more often.

On audio, do not expect any of them to be good. None of these manufacturers publishes microphone specifications of any kind — no mic count, no sensitivity, no frequency response — so treat built-in audio as a scratch track and put a real microphone somewhere out of the airflow. 05Night and Low Light

Small sensors in the dark need light, not processing. Three moves, in order of how much they matter: open the aperture if you can, drop the frame rate, and turn stabilisation down or off.

Why turn stabilisation off. Electronic stabilisation crops into the sensor and then has to hold a moving crop steady using frames that are already noisy. In low light it amplifies grain and, worse, starts hunting — you get a slow wobble that no amount of grading fixes. Put the camera on something instead. A cheap mini tripod beats any stabiliser in the dark.

On the Action 6, set f/2 manually. Leaving aperture on auto in a dim scene sometimes gets you a closed-down aperture because the metering is balancing other things; at night you want every photon. This is the one scenario where the variable aperture is unambiguously the best hardware on this page — a 1/1.1" sensor behind f/2 is the largest light-gathering combination of the four.

The counter-argument is PureVideo. Insta360 is the only one of these three brands that ships a named, dedicated low-light mode, and the Ace Pro 2 pairs it with 13.5 published stops of dynamic range — which is exactly what a night city scene asks for, since the problem is not darkness but a neon sign four stops above a shadow. Set realistic expectations for all four: usable to ISO 1600–3200, emergency-only above that, and no action camera is a full-frame mirrorless.

06Timelapse and Hyperlapse

Interval is the only setting that matters and it changes entirely with the subject. This table is camera-agnostic — the maths is the maths.

Hyperlapse. All four cameras have a motion-aware hyperlapse mode. Set it to 2× or 5× and let it decide, unless you need precise control — in which case shoot a plain timelapse and change the speed in post, where you can ramp it.

For astro, shoot stills to RAW rather than using the video timelapse mode, and assemble the sequence afterwards. You get per-frame exposure control and you can stack for noise. This is also the one place where the Ace Pro 2's 50MP stills earn their keep on this page: more pixels per frame means you can pan and zoom inside a static star sequence in post without softening it.

Hyperlapse never works handheld. Mount to a bike, a chest harness, or a car. Walking hyperlapse looks shaky on every camera ever made, stabilised or not, because the problem is your gait, not the sensor.

07FPV and Drone Mount

Strapping an action camera to a drone inverts almost every default. Maximum bitrate, stabilisation off — the aircraft has its own, and two stabilisers fighting produces a slow rubbery drift — and an ND filter is not optional.

Why the ND is mandatory here. Propellers put high-frequency vibration into the airframe, which interacts with the sensor's rolling shutter and produces the wavy "jello" distortion you see in cheap FPV footage. An ND forces a slower shutter, the slower shutter adds a frame or two of motion blur, and the blur masks the artefact. Without one, the sky develops horizontal ripples and there is nothing you can do in post.

One correction to what this page used to say: it recommended Freewell filters for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2. Freewell does not make filters for the Ace Pro 2. 08Dashcam and Long Recording

An action camera makes a serviceable dashcam if you accept that this is a heat-management problem wearing a settings problem's clothes.

Take the battery out and run on USB-C. The cell is the largest heat source in continuous recording, and a camera with no battery in a hot car will run 1080p for hours where the same camera on battery will thermally throttle. This single change matters more than every other setting in the table.

Use a 256GB or 512GB card, formatted exFAT, from a brand you have heard of. Set loop segments short enough that you are not scrubbing a 20-minute file to find four seconds of incident. If you want the same camera to be a usable dashcam and your weekend camera, note that the Action 5 Pro's 64GB of internal storage (47GB usable) means it still records if you forget the card in your laptop — the only one of the four with that backstop.

Start on Standard. Nothing has ruined more holiday footage than a beginner shooting everything flat and discovering on the flight home that they now owe themselves fourteen hours of grading. Move to flat when you have graded something and enjoyed it.

The one place profile choice interacts with hardware is dynamic range, and here the published numbers are lopsided: Insta360 states 13.5 stops for the Ace Pro 2, while DJI and GoPro publish no dynamic-range figure for any camera in this guide. If you shoot flat and grade, that is the only number of the four you can actually plan against.

Stabilisation: What's Published, and What Actually Helps

Stabilisation is the difference between footage that looks shot and footage that looks strapped to a washing machine. It is also the spec people argue about with the least data, so here is what each manufacturer actually names.

Note that "FlowState 2.0" does not exist — this site published that figure before and it was wrong. The system is called FlowState Stabilization, without a version number.

Four settings changes that improve stabilisation on any of these cameras, in order of effect. Shoot 30fps rather than 60 when you are not planning to slow the clip down, because the stabiliser gets a longer exposure per frame and less noise to work against. Get the camera closer to your centre of mass — a chest mount beats a handheld or a pole every time, and a pole beats a handlebar. Turn horizon lock on for anything where the camera rolls, off for anything where you are deliberately banking. And never use digital zoom while moving: it crops into the sensor, leaving the stabiliser less margin, and amplifies whatever shake is left. The Action 6's zoom is digital-only to 2×, so on that camera zoom and stabilisation are directly in competition.

We are not publishing head-to-head stabilisation scores. The result depends almost entirely on mount, terrain and speed, and a number from one afternoon on one trail would read as more precise than it is. What we can tell you is which features exist and which settings change the outcome.

What are the best all-purpose settings for a 2026 action camera?

4K30, the standard (not widest) field of view, stabilisation on, ISO capped at 100–800, white balance auto, standard colour profile, sharpness medium or low, EV 0. That covers roughly nine scenarios in ten on the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, both DJI Osmo Action models and the GoPro HERO13 Black. Change to 4K60 for fast action, to the least-distorted lens setting for talking to camera, and lock white balance to 5500K in snow.

Should I shoot flat/log or standard?

Standard, until you have graded a video and liked doing it. Flat preserves the most dynamic range and is the right choice if every clip goes through DaVinci Resolve or Premiere — but it is a commitment, not a quality setting, and flat footage that never gets graded looks worse than standard footage straight out of camera. One number is worth knowing if you do grade: Insta360 publishes 13.5 stops of dynamic range for the Ace Pro 2, and neither DJI nor GoPro publishes a figure for any camera here.

Do I need an ND filter?

In two situations, yes. Drone and FPV mounting, where an ND16 is the only thing that hides propeller-induced rolling-shutter distortion; and bright-daylight ground footage where you want the 180-degree shutter rule to give you natural motion blur. Otherwise it is one more thing to lose. Note that the DJI Osmo Action 6's variable f/2–f/4 aperture reduces the need in bright light — it is the only one of the four that can stop down instead. And if you shoot an Insta360 Ace Pro 2, buy Insta360's own ND Filter Set or K&F Concept's $44.99 ND/PL 4-pack; Freewell does not make filters for that camera, whatever you have read elsewhere.

Why is my footage still shaky with stabilisation on?

Four usual causes. You are in low light, where the stabiliser is working from noisy frames and starts hunting — turn it off and brace the camera instead. You are on the wrong mount, and handlebars transmit everything. You are at the widest field of view, which leaves the least crop margin for the stabiliser to work in. Or you are shooting a very high frame rate mode, where some cameras reduce stabilisation to keep up. Drop to 4K30 or 4K60, move the camera to your chest, and most of it goes away.

Which camera needs the least tweaking out of the box?

They are closer than they used to be, and the honest answer depends on what you shoot. The DJI Osmo Action 6's variable aperture means its auto exposure has an extra control the others do not, so it handles walking from bright street into a dim doorway with less visible stepping. The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is the one we would leave on auto for mixed light, because PureVideo and 13.5 stops of stated dynamic range do more of the work — dial sharpness down one notch on day one and otherwise leave it. Both are less fussy than the GoPro HERO13 Black, which benefits most from a −0.5 EV nudge and lower sharpening.
