There are four DJI drones we can put verified September 2026 figures against, and they span $685 to $2,199 — which is a wide enough range that the wrong choice is expensive in both directions.
Short answer: the DJI Mini 5 Pro at $685 is the one most people should buy. It carries a 1-inch 50MP sensor at f/1.8 and shoots 4K120, and at 249.9g it sits just under the 250g threshold that triggers registration in the United States and many other jurisdictions. That combination — a 1-inch sensor with no registration paperwork — did not exist in this weight class two years ago. The Air 3S at $989 buys you a second camera and a much sturdier airframe; the Mavic 4 Pro at $2,199 is a professional tool and priced like one; the Avata 2 at $1,019 does something none of the others can, which is fly first-person.
One thing to say up front, because it changes how you read every other drone comparison online. There is no DJI Avata 3, no Air 4 and no Mini 6. Those three models are rumour: no product pages, no listings, no announcements. They appear as real products with real prices in a large amount of currently published drone content, including — until this update — on this site. If a comparison quotes you a price for an Air 4, it is quoting you a number somebody made up.
And a note on what's missing here. This comparison covers price, camera, weight and who each drone suits. It does not quote flight times, transmission ranges or obstacle-sensing specifications, because we could not trace those to a primary source and date them for this update — and this site does not publish figures it cannot date. On the two empty columns. The original version of this page filled them with confident numbers — 34, 42, 45 minutes; 15, 20, 30 kilometres — attached to drones that in two cases did not exist. We have kept the columns rather than deleting them, because flight time and range genuinely are decision criteria and you should see that we don't have them, rather than see a table quietly reshaped to hide the gap. DJI publishes both figures; we simply have not verified and dated them for this update, and an unverified figure on this site is worth less than an admission.
What the table does tell you. The price ladder is steep and the jumps are not linear. $685 to $989 buys a second camera and about three times the mass. $989 to $2,199 more than doubles the price for a Four Thirds sensor and a third camera. And the Avata 2 costs more than the Air 3S while carrying the smallest sensor of the four, because you are not buying image quality — you are buying a flight experience.

01DJI Mini 5 Pro — The One Most People Should Buy
$685 · 249.9g · 1-inch 50MP sensor at f/1.8 · 4K120
The Mini line used to be the compromise you accepted for portability. It isn't any more, and the reason is one number: a 1-inch sensor in a 249.9g airframe. That is the same sensor class as the main camera on the Air 3S, in a drone weighing roughly a third as much and costing $304 less.
The weight matters legally, not just physically. At 249.9g the Mini 5 Pro sits fractionally under the 250g mark that triggers recreational registration requirements in the United States and in a long list of other jurisdictions. That is not a marketing accident — it is the entire design brief, and it is why the airframe stops where it stops. Rules differ by country and they change, so check your own regulator before you fly; but the practical effect for most buyers is that this is the DJI drone you can take on a trip without paperwork.
On the camera. f/1.8 is a wide aperture for a drone and it does real work at the ends of the day, when the light is both best and scarcest. 50MP gives you stills you can crop hard. 4K120 is more than a slow-motion novelty: it means you can shoot a pass at 120fps, slow it to a quarter speed and still deliver 4K, which is the single easiest way to make handheld-feeling aerial footage look deliberate.
The honest limitation is the one every small drone has: mass. A 249.9g airframe is more affected by wind than a 724g one, full stop. If your flying is mostly coastal, mostly exposed ridgelines, or mostly in gusty conditions, the Air 3S's extra 474 grams buys stability that no amount of software makes up for.

02DJI Air 3S — Two Cameras, One Airframe
$989 · 724g · 1-inch f/1.8 main + 1/1.3-inch f/2.8 second camera · 4K120
The Air 3S's argument is the second camera. Its main sensor is 1-inch at f/1.8 — the same class as the Mini 5 Pro's — and alongside it sits a 1/1.3-inch camera at f/2.8. Two cameras means two framings of the same subject without moving the aircraft, which changes how you edit: you can cut between a wide establishing frame and a tighter one from a single flight, and the cut works because both frames were shot at the same moment from the same position.
Where the money actually goes. $304 over the Mini 5 Pro does not buy you a better main sensor — both are 1-inch f/1.8. It buys you the second camera, and it buys you 724 grams of airframe. That mass is the underrated half of the purchase: a heavier drone holds position better in wind, and holding position is what separates footage you can use from footage that drifts.
Where it doesn't win. The second camera is smaller and slower than the main one — 1/1.3-inch at f/2.8 against 1-inch at f/1.8 — so in poor light you'll be back on the main camera and the Air 3S's advantage narrows towards the Mini's. And at 724g you are firmly into registration territory in the US and most of Europe, so the Mini's paperwork advantage disappears entirely.
Who should buy it. People who fly often enough that wind is a recurring problem, and who edit their footage rather than posting the clip. If you fly a handful of times a year on holiday, the Mini 5 Pro is the better $685.

03DJI Mavic 4 Pro — The Professional Tool
$2,199 · 1,063g · 100MP Four Thirds f/2 + 48MP + 50MP · DCI 4K120
This is the one where the sensor size stops being a spec-sheet argument and starts being a different category of image. A Four Thirds sensor at 100MP and f/2 is substantially larger than the 1-inch sensors in the Mini and the Air, and the gap shows up exactly where you'd expect: shadow detail, tonal separation in skies, and how much you can push a grade before the image falls apart.
It carries three cameras — the 100MP Four Thirds main, a 48MP and a 50MP — which is the practical difference between a drone that gives you a shot and a drone that gives you coverage. And it records DCI 4K120: DCI rather than UHD, which matters if you are delivering into a cinema pipeline and matters not at all if you are delivering to YouTube.
The case against it, for most readers. $2,199 is more than three times the Mini 5 Pro and $1,210 more than the Air 3S. At 1,063g it is four times the Mini's mass, needs a proper case, and is registered everywhere. For social media, for property listings, for travel content, the difference between this and the Air 3S is visible on a large screen and invisible on a phone.
Who should buy it. People whose drone footage has to intercut with footage from cameras that cost more than the drone, and people being paid enough that a Four Thirds sensor is a line item rather than a splurge. If you are asking whether you need it, you do not.

04DJI Avata 2 — First-Person Flight
$1,019 · 377g · 1/1.3-inch f/2.8 · 4K100
The Avata 2 is not competing with the other three and it is a mistake to compare it on sensor size. Its camera — 1/1.3-inch at f/2.8, 4K100 — is the smallest and slowest of the four, and it costs more than the Air 3S, which has a 1-inch f/1.8 main camera. On paper that looks like a bad deal. On screen it isn't, because the Avata does something the camera drones physically cannot: it flies through things.
An FPV drone gives you the dive down a cliff face, the pass through a gap in a treeline, the chase shot behind a rider. That footage has a specific visual signature — speed, proximity, commitment — that a stabilised GPS camera platform cannot fake at any sensor size. You are buying the flight, and the camera is along for the ride.
The honest costs. FPV has a learning curve that the Mini and Air simply don't, and the failure mode is a crash rather than a drift. At 377g it is registered in the US and most of Europe. 4K100 is a slightly lower frame-rate ceiling than the 4K120 of the Mini and Air. And it is the wrong drone for the jobs the others are right for: it is not a landscape drone, not a property drone, and not a first drone.
Who should buy it. Action and adventure shooters who already know what an FPV line looks like and want to shoot one, and people who have flown FPV in a simulator and want the DJI version of that experience without building a quad.

What the previous version of this page said. It reviewed a "DJI Air 4" at $1,249 with a 1-inch sensor and 42-minute flight time, a "DJI Mavic 5 Pro" at $2,699 with a 4/3 sensor and ProRes 422 HQ, and a "DJI Avata 3" at $1,499 with a 48MP camera. It gave all three specification lists, camera assessments and buying recommendations. None of those three products exist. The figures came from rumour aggregation, presented as verified fact, with affiliate buttons underneath them.
That is worth stating plainly rather than quietly correcting, for two reasons. First, if you are reading this because you were comparing an "Air 4" against something else, you now know why you couldn't find it in stock. Second, it is the clearest possible illustration of why this page now leaves the flight-time and range columns marked "not verified": a number that isn't sourced isn't cautious, it's fiction with a decimal point.
On rumoured models generally. DJI's release cadence makes successor rumours perpetual, and a rumoured price for an unannounced product is worth nothing — the third-party sites carrying them routinely quote ranges that move by hundreds of dollars month to month. If you need a drone now, buy from the four above. If you can wait, waiting is free, but don't plan around a spec sheet nobody has published.

Do I need to register a DJI Mini 5 Pro?
The Mini 5 Pro weighs 249.9g, which puts it just under the 250g threshold that triggers recreational drone registration in the United States and in many other countries. That is the reason the airframe is designed to that weight. Rules vary by jurisdiction, change periodically, and often differ for commercial flying regardless of weight — so check your own aviation regulator before you fly rather than relying on a weight figure alone. The other three drones here — 377g, 724g and 1,063g — are over the threshold everywhere it applies.
Air 3S or Mavic 4 Pro?
If you are delivering to social platforms or YouTube, the Air 3S at $989. The Mavic 4 Pro's advantages — the 100MP Four Thirds sensor, the third camera, DCI 4K120 — are real and they show up on large screens, in aggressive colour grades and in stills you need to crop hard. They are close to invisible on a phone. The Mavic is also 1,063g against 724g, which is the difference between a bag and a case. Buy the Mavic when a client is specifying the deliverable, not when you're choosing it yourself.
Can the Avata 2 be used as a normal camera drone?
It is the wrong tool for that job. Its camera is the smallest of the four — 1/1.3-inch at f/2.8, 4K100 — and it costs more than the Air 3S, which has a 1-inch f/1.8 main camera. FPV airframes are built for agility rather than for holding a stable hover, so for landscape passes, property work or slow reveals the Mini 5 Pro or Air 3S will give you better footage for less money. Are DJI drones waterproof?
None of these four is waterproof or water-resistant, and none should be flown in rain, snow or over water you can't afford to lose the aircraft in. There are no published water or ingress ratings for any of them. This is different from action cameras, where depth ratings are standard — the Insta360 X6 and DJI's own Osmo Action 6 are both rated to 20 metres. A drone is not.
